Algorithm Appreciation is the tendency of laypeople and non-experts to trust and rely on advice or decisions more when they are labeled as coming from an algorithm rather than a human expert.

Real-world examples

Novice travelers are more likely to book a flight route recommended by an 'AI Routing Algorithm' than the exact same route suggested by an experienced human travel agent.

  • People weight an identical numerical estimate more heavily when told it came from an algorithm — until they consider themselves experts on the task.
  • Shoppers accept 'recommended for you' picks more readily when the suggestion is framed as data-driven.

How to design for it (nudge strategy)

Label automated insights and guidance as 'Algorithmic Recommendations' when targeting non-expert consumers, while highlighting human oversight to maintain emotional safety.
